Williamsburg Landing is the First In The State to Offer New Advanced Dementia Care Model

Williamsburg, VA – Williamsburg Landing will be the first in the State of Virginia to offer a Namaste Program. Namaste means “to honor the spirit within.” This structured care program integrates compassionate nursing care with individualized, meaningful activities for people living with advanced dementia.

People with advanced dementia are unable to participate in traditional recreational and social activity programs. These “silent residents” are often marginalized, resulting in being left alone or sleeping in common areas. Studies show that most spend up to 87% of their days without interaction with others.  

Namaste Care was developed by Joyce Simard in the United States and takes an innovative approach based on offering four hours a day of multisensory stimulation to these residents in a separate, tranquil environment. Maintaining meaningful connections through sensory engagements such as therapeutic touch, music, and hand massages enhances the quality of life through the last moments of their lives. Family members are encouraged to join in Namaste sessions and learn new ways to stay connected with their loved ones when verbal communication is no longer available. 

To complement our Memory Support Program, which provides evidence-based care in our award-winning Memory Support home, Namaste will be located on the second floor of our Health and Rehabilitation Center. This program will strengthen our resident’s care continuum opportunities, allowing us to individualize care needs and experiences. Admission is available to non-residents of Williamsburg Landing as space permits. Those interested in residency should contact Pattie Gaudio at 757.585.7743.
